I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music do you?

It goes like this
The fourth the fifth
The minor fall the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah!

Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah!

Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah

3:50 is so divine, especially with Jennifer Warnes backing vocals. It fills me with joy but also a deep sadness. I just read this quote by k.d. lang, who considers the song to be about "the struggle between having human desire and searching for spiritual wisdom. It's being caught between those two places." I think this sums it up very nicely.

A week ago my mother passed away on September 26th. This was one of her favorite songs.
